Overall The Best Dog Food Brands

When it comes to looking at dog food, price is not all that matters.  You can find good quality products at low prices, just as you can find low-quality products at high prices.  Determining what brand and type of dog food to go with is all about your dogs’ needs.  We will break that down shortly.

As a general rule of thumb when looking at dog food treat it like when you look at the ingredients for the food you as a human eat.  Make sure you understand the ingredients, IE avoid chemical preservatives.  Make sure the proteins are meat, not by-products of meat.  At the end of the day, if you don’t know what an ingredient is or cannot pronounce it, pass on it!  More on this in a later section.

Different Types Of Dog Food

In the world of dog food, there are 3 basic types of dog food.

Those are

  1. Dry Dog Food
  2. Wet Dog Food
  3. Alternative Dog Food – Includes Fresh, Frozen, Freeze Dried and Raw.

Then in each of those types, there are different categories.  You will have Puppy Dog Food, Adult Dog Food, Large Dog – Dog Food, Small Dog – Dog Food and much more.

Let’s start with the different types.

  • Dry Dog Food – Convenient and inexpensive, dry dog food also known as kibble is both long lasting and an easy choice to feed your dog.  Dry dog food is probably the most popular option for food your dogs today, as it is easy to store, and easy to plate, and measure.  Because of the nature of the food and how it is prepared, it can contain preservatives, processed ingredients and fillers, so make sure to check the ingredients before purchasing. Many commercial dry dog food makers will use “by-product” which can be the left overs from chicken and beef processing, these items might not be the healthiest for your pet, so do your research before buying.
  • Wet Dog Food – This food comes in a can or pouch and is very easy for dogs to eat and digest.  If your dog has trouble eating dry food, wet food is an excellent option.  It is also a great option for those pets that need more water in their diet.  It is also a nice treat to mix some wet food with dry kibble.  Wet food can be a bit messier, to prepare and for dogs to eat, so be prepared to do some cleaning after feedings.
  • Alternative Dog Food – There exists a few alternatives to the traditional Wet or Dry dog foods.  The most popular of currently is the Fresh and Frozen dog foods.  Touting benefits related to increased nutrients because the food is not processed and kept as natural as possible.  Make sure to consult your vet before exploring these options.
